On Sunday we saw three great exemplars of the art standing side by side on a balcony overlooking the Cenotaph: the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duchess of Cambridge and the Countess of Wessex, in whose hands so much of the Royal Family’s future rests. It is all the more remarkable, then, that those who have proved most adept at it in recent years have had to learn the hard way, by marrying into the strange world of Royalty, rather than being born into it.
To navigate the perilous waters of statesmanship, etiquette, politics, fashion, and family rivalries requires a skill set that few of us could ever hope to possess.
